Popspotting #92: “Wailin’ Brave” (July 15, 2011)
This week’s Feedback Friday opens with a couple of musical gems (The Wailin’ Jennys and The Swell Season), then races through books (Sarah Vowell and “Robopocalypse“), TV (“Shameless“), movies (“Highlander,” “Cars 2” and “Brave“) and yes, once again, “Firefly.”
Next week is Comic-Con, and we’re bringing the whole family out to San Diego! While that means we’ll be soaking in all kinds of news and stories to tell on our podcast, we may not be putting out our regular set of daily shows. We hope you’ll stick with us, though! كيفية لعب البوكر
In the mean time, we encourage you to catch up on any shows you might have missed… and more importantly, maybe take a moment to send us an email. What topics would you like us to tackle? Are our shows still too short, or getting too long? مشاهدة قناة beoutq Is a daily podcast a treat, or a challenge to keep up with? نتائج مباريات كوبا امريكا 2022 We make Popspotting for you, so we’d love to know what you want!
Need more awesomeness? Watch The Swell Season cover “Two Headed Boy” by Neutral Milk Hotel on AV Udercover!
As distinctive as “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” is, I’m of the camp that anyone who covers any song off that album is (1.) brave for tackling it and (2.) should be lauded for bringing more exposure to this album.
Jeff Magnum is pretty reclusive, and there’s slim to none chance that he’ll head out on tour. (He does an occasional appearance here and there.) I too think it’s difficult for anyone to match Magnum’s delivery, in which case the effort should be judged more than the execution.
John Prine is the guy I’d suggest as your next new artist to check out… even though he’s been around since the 70s.  He’s a US folk/country singer-songwriter and musician who is known for his lyrics (“Sam Stone”, “Dear Abby”) and for his sense of humor as on “Illegal Smile”.
One fan early was Kris Kristofferson, who helped Prine get a record contract, and Prine has been a critic’s favorite since. He faces throat cancer back in the late 90’s, survived, and now continues to write and sing although with a slightly raspier voice.
There’s a live DVD that’s a bit hard to find with John  called Sessions at West 54th Street http://www.last.fm/music/John+Prine/Sessions+at+West+54th+Street;  the songs with Iris DeMent and another song called Lake Marie are just amazing, folk with a sharp edge, with humor, and with great musicianship.
